A tile museum and an impulse ticket purchase

Having managed two monasteries in one day I had a day spare in Lisbon (since the hostel bed was already paid for) so I spent a good part of the day at the Museum of Azulejos – ceramic tiles.

The display starts with early Moorish influence tiles and concludes with modern artist-designed work, one of my favourite of which was this one:

The museum is housed in a former monastery which still has the ornately decorated church and associated spaces:

The choir includes a wonderful display of reliquaries, in glass cabinets on the wall above and behind the stalls.

Back at the hostel I decided to go the Azores. To be fair, it had always been a possibility as there are two UN heritage sites there but up until now I’d not made a decision either way. I spent some time pondering how long to go for,  whether to do one or both sites (since they are on different islands) and poring over the inter-island ferry timetables. Finally I had a week long itinerary planned and bought my flight for departure the next day.
