Whilst Rio does not have any world heritage sites I could hardly pass it by, so took a bus there from Ouro Preto for a short two day visit. I was still nervous after the mugging and had heard too many tales of tourists being robbed here to want to stay very long.
I visited the famous Christ the Redeemer statue high up above the city and the smaller Sugar Loaf mountain. The former is accessed by funicular railway and the latter by cable cars and both offer great views over the city.
Despite my fears and my short visit I liked what I saw of Rio; it manages to be an attractive high-rise city with sufficient variety of buildings and relieving greenery to stop it being grim, as such urban fabric can be.
I did not visit the beaches though. I have far too much acreage needing to be covered in sun block.
